New low-power raspberry pi for solar and battery use

Legendary UK Linux project hits original $25 target

The raspberry pi project has finally reached its original pricing goal of $25, with the release of its Model A version in europe. 


Nearly a year after the launch of the $35 Model B, which has already sold over one million units, the makers of the now legendary low-cost Linux computer have released a new slimmed-down version. The Model A provides a stripped-down spec, reducing on-board DRAM from 512MB to 256MB, and offers only one USB  port and no Ethernet. All this means that the Model A is not only $10 cheaper but, more importantly, that it consumes roughly a third of the power of the Model B. The project’s blog says that the new, low-powered device will be of particular importance for those wanting to run projects  from a battery or using solar power, citing robots, sensor platforms in remote locations, Wi-Fi repeaters attached to the local bus stop and so forth as examples.  “We’re working on software to get the power consumption even lower,” they added.
